Arts Scholarship

The Arts Scholarships Program is designed to recognize and encourage New Brunswick students who have demonstrated exceptional artistic talent and potential, and who are pursuing a career in the arts. This program awards scholarships for full time, part time or short-term studies.

EligibilityOnly New Brunswick residents are eligible to receive funding. A resident is defined as a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant who has resided in New Brunswick for at least one year immediately preceding the application deadline. An applicant is eligible for consideration who:

  • has already completed relevant basic training and who has demonstrated exceptional potential and talent as an artist;
  • intends to study creative writing, music, theatre, dance, film/video, visual arts/photography, crafts, literary translation, or arts administration at a recognized institution or with a recognized private instructor for the purpose of pursuing a career as a professional artist or an arts professional; and
  • intends to enroll in a full-time or part-time postsecondary program, or in short-term studies.
  • Students enrolled full-time in schools specializing in the arts are also eligible.
Amount

Full-time studies: $2,500 maximum
Part-time or Short-term studies: up to $1,000

The George Evans, Thomas Owens & M.A. (Tex) Hughes Scholarships

Six bursaries valued at $500.00 each are available annually for attendance at any University or Community College in the Atlantic Provinces.

These bursaries are awarded in memory of builders and leaders of the union movement in New Brunswick: George Evans, Thomas Owens & M.A. (Tex) Hughes.

Eligibility
  • Union members leaving work to upgrade their education in good standing with a local union affiliated to CUPE New Brunswick.
  • Sons, daughters, or legal wards of a member in good standing of a local union affiliated to CUPE New Brunswick.

Annually, the Herbert H. Carnegie Future Aces Foundation offers scholarships to students from across Canada who exhibit exemplary citizenship qualities and who are in need of financial assistance to further their educational goals.

Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program

Toyota Canada Inc. and Earth Day Canada established the Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program to help cultivate and nurture this environmental leadership. The Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program encourages and rewards graduating Canadian high school students who have distinguished themselves through environmental community service, extracurricular and volunteer activities, and academic excellence.

EligibilityRegional panels of community, business and environmental leaders will select the winners who best meet the selection criteria. Awards will be granted in five geographic areas:

  • Are currently in their graduating year or graduated in the last two years from a:

1.     Canadian high school; or

2.     Quebec Cegep.

  • Are entering, for the 2012-2013 academic year, their first year of full-time studies at:

1.     An accredited Canadian college or university; or

2.     A Quebec accredited collegial institution.

  • Are a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident (landed immigrant) or on Refugee Status.
  • Have demonstrated outstanding environmental commitment, community service and leadership during the course of their studies.
  • Maintain a high level of academic achievement.
  • Are not an employee or immediate family member of an employee of Toyota Canada Inc. and its Dealers, Toyota Canada Foundation, Earth Day Canada or Panasonic Canada Inc.
  • Fulfill the requirements of the application package.
Amount

$5000 annually, to be applied directly towards tuition, books, room and board (where applicable) or other educational expenses for the first year of post-secondary full-time studies in Canada

Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Program

Terry Fox Humanitarian Awards are open to graduating secondary level students and those currently studying towards a first university degree or diploma in a Canadian post-secondary institution. For students in Quebec, you must be entering 2nd year cégep or university.

EligibilityAward recipients must meet the following criteria:

  • has already completed relevant basic training and who has demonstrated exceptional potential and talent as an artist;
  • intends to study creative writing, music, theatre, dance, film/video, visual arts/photography, crafts, literary translation, or arts administration at a recognized institution or with a recognized private instructor for the purpose of pursuing a career as a professional artist or an arts professional; and

Upper Year W. Garfield Weston Award

The W. Garfield Weston Awards program was established in 1999 by the generous contribution and vision of The W. Garfield Weston Foundation. Administered by the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation, the program is designed to recognize outstanding college-bound students who show a strong commitment to their fields of study and are interested in making positive contributions to their communities.

Offers both entrance awards and upper-level awards.

Eligibility
  • be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • be presently enrolled in a full-time college studies program recognized as eligible by the college and the W. Garfield Weston Awards, OR enrolled full-time in a specialized college certificate in preparation for entry into an eligible program in the fall of the same year as the deadline for submission.
  • have at least two full academic terms remaining in his or her current college program after August of the current academic year, and be pursuing his or her remaining studies full time, with a 100% course load.
  • have a minimum academic average of 73% or equivalent performance level.
  • be nominated by his or her College or CEGEP.

Ken Dryden ScholarshipEach year Ken Dryden Scholarships are awarded to young people, currently or formerly in the care of the Canadian child welfare system, who demonstrate great achievement and promise.

EligibilityYou are eligible only if all of the following items apply to you:

  • You are a Canadian Citizen or Landed Immigrant.
  • You have met the college and/or university entry requirements, and are applying to any Canadian college or university, and are working towards your undergraduate diploma or degree.
  • You are under the age of 30 before the date of the application deadline.
  • You are in or were in the child welfare/protection system - this means that you have been at least one of the following:
    Designated a temporary, society or crown ward,
    Designated a temporary or permanent guardianship order,
    Assigned a social worker or child protection worker,
    Placed in a group home,
    Placed in a foster home.

You are not eligible if you or your family only received social assistance, welfare, family benefits, or employment insurance. You are also not eligible if you currently work for or are a board member of the National Youth in Care Network.

Amount

Each scholarship covers up to $3,000 or 80% of the cost of tuition and fees, whichever is less, and is renewable annually, based on reasonable progress toward the completion of an undergraduate degree or diploma.

RBC Royal Bank Scholarship Awards for Undergraduates

RBC Royal Bank Scholarships are designed for students in any stream pursuing studies in any field. We're looking to honour hard work, innovation and solid career direction.

Eligibility

To be eligible*, students require a minimum grade average of 70 per cent and acceptance into a Canadian college or university (and/or CEGEP in Quebec) for full-time study in the Fall/Winter session.

Amount

Four awards of $10,000 will be distributed to students across the country. Plus two additional $10,000 reserved exclusively for RBC Royal Bank student clients.

Visible Minorities Scholarship

Applicants must be children, or foster children, of National Union of Public and General Employees members who plan to enter a post-secondary institution. A 750 to 1000-word essay is required on the topic “The importance of quality public service in enhancing the quality of life of visible minorities.”

Tommy Douglas Scholarship

The Tommy Douglas Scholarship is open to all students who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education institution full-time in 2012-2013 and who are the children of, or foster children of, a National Union of Public and General Employees member. It will be awarded for the best 750-1,000 word essay on: How Tommy Douglas contributed to making Canada a more just and equitable society.

CrossLites Scholarship Award

The CrossLites Scholarship Award was created to provide high school, undergraduate, and graduate students with a chance to learn about Dr. Charles Parker, become inspired, and win some money.

EligibilityScholarship Contest is open to High School, College and Graduate School students. As the applicant, you will write a reflective essay (400 - 600 words) based on one of Dr. Parker’s quotes or messages. You will be competing against students of their level, thus 9th-12th graders will be competing for a chance to win 1st, 2nd or 3rd place just as undergraduate students (Freshmen-Senior) will be competing to win their own 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place. You may enter a maximum of two essays in the contest.

Mensa Canada General Scholarship

The Mensa Canada General Scholarship is an award of $1000, and is offered annually, as funding permits. Applicants are invited to write a short essay in which detail their career plan, list their accomplishments to date, and describe what they plan to do in order to achieve their future career goals.

Eligibility
  • Applicants must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrant enrolled in a full-time program at a Canadian post-secondary institution, accredited by the applicable provincial Ministry of Education, during the 2011-2012 academic year.
  • A full-time program is defined by consecutive Fall and Winter semesters.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old on the deadline for submission date.

The BBPA Legacy Scholarships

BBPA Legacy Scholarships are established in the name of Black Canadians who enriched Canada with their contributions in the arts, the professions, science, business, technology, politics and other areas of endeavour. BBPA Legacy Scholarships are funded by general donations and investment income from the endowment fund.

EligibilityA Black Student who is:

  • Between 17 to 30 years of age.
  • Enrolled in a full time study at a Canadian college or university degree.

Top 20 Under 20

At Youth in Motion, we want to encourage you to continue making a difference. That is why we created Top 20 Under 20™ - to celebrate and honour Canadians who have demonstrated a significant level innovation, leadership and achievement but have not yet reached the age of 20. There are incredible young people in this country doing incredible things!

Eligibility

  • A young person who has demonstrated significant amounts of Innovation, Leadership and Achievements in their life, school, community, province or country
  • Under the age of 20
  • Canadian citizenship or permanent residence status
  • Desire to pursue some form of education or training, whether that be Canadian secondary, post-secondary or training education (high school equivalent, CEGEP, GED, college, university, training or apprenticeship programs)
  • All nominations must include a letter of endorsement by a sponsor.  The sponsor must speak to the applicant’s role and innovative project.
  • Top 20 Under 20™ is an individual award.  Applications for a group are not permitted.
  • Not be a past recipient of the Top 20 Under 20™ Award
Amount

Up to $5,000 to be applied towards an educational experience. This experience includes post secondary, training, summer course, exchange program or a conference/seminar. Exceptions will be considered on a case by case basis.

Kin Canada Bursary

Kin Canada established the Kin Canada Bursaries, a program of the Hal Rogers Endowment Fund, to promote, encourage and sponsor educational programs and activities.

Throughout his life, Hal Rogers believed in the value of education.

Eligibility

  • Be a Canadian Citizen or Landed Immigrant
  • Plan to be a full-time student in the next academic school year at a recognized university, community college, technical institute or other post-secondary institution for advanced learning
  • Demonstrate high ideals and qualities of citizenship, and have not previously received a bursary from the Hal Rogers Endowment Fund
  • Complete and mail the standard current application form to only one Kinsmen, Kinette, or Kin club nearest to their permanent residence.  Club mailing addresses can be found on this website under “How to Apply”.

The Dalton Camp Award

In December 2002, FRIENDS of Canadian Broadcasting announced The Dalton Camp Award to honour the memory of Dalton Camp, a distinguished commentator on Canadian public affairs.

The Dalton Camp Award will go to the winner of an essay competition on the link between democracy and the media in Canada.

Eligibility

  • Any Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada may enter this essay contest except members of the Friends of Canadian Broadcasting Steering Committee, retained consultants or business associates, and members of the Selection Committee; as well as their immediate family members. Previous winners are ineligible
  • Essays shall be written in English, and shall not exceed 2,000 words in length, including any editorial content in citations.  Essays should emphasize creative rather than technical or academic writing.
  • Essays shall be submitted by completing an online application or by emailing a double-spaced Microsoft Word format document.

Award

In 2012, there will be one Award consisting of a prize of $5,000, as well as a bronze castmedal by the late Canadian sculptress Dora de Pédèry-Hunt. Up to four finalists will also be recognized and awarded a prize of $1,000 each.

Nel Oudemans Award

The Nel Oudemans Award acknowledges the extraordinary contribution of Fredericton weaver Nel Oudemans to Canada’s applied arts field, as well as to fine arts & craft education in New Brunswick.

To mark Nel Oudemans’ association since 1947 with the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, the Award will recognize the pursuit of excellence in the fields of fine craft, design, and the visual arts by the College’s recent graduates.

Eligibility

  • Must have continued to develop their skills in their field, either by continued study or professional practice, in New Brunswick or elsewhere
  • Must have graduated from The New Brunswick College of Craft and Design within the past 5 years (students who are about to graduate are not eligible)

Credit Counselling Services of Atlantic Canada Scholarships

Learning financial skills is crucial to future financial freedom.  Since 2004 Credit Counselling Services of Atlantic Canada, Inc. (CCSAC) has awarded $101,000 to students across Atlantic Canada.  With several $1,000 scholarships available annually, we continue to provide students with the tools to minimize their post-secondary debt and to use credit wisely. Our scholarship is released in January of the following year that it is awarded.

Eligibility

CCSAC Scholarships are open to residents of Atlantic Canada (regardless of age) who will be enrolled in an accredited post-secondary program in the up-coming academic year. Applications are accepted in both French and English. The scholarship recipients will be required to provide proof of acceptance and enrollment.

Assumption Foundation Scholarship Fund

Assumption Life has remained true to the principles of its founders and contributes to the social and cultural development of the communities it serves. Over the years, the Assumption Foundation has awarded over $4,000,000 in student scholarships and donations to academic institutions.

To qualify for one of the scholarships, the applicant needs to be enrolled as a full-time student in a CEGEP or a post-secondary institution. The applicant must also show an average of 70%.

Wage Gap Action Plan Scholarship

The Scholarship Program is intended to encourage women and men, entering their first year at a New Brunswick college, to seek a non-traditional career where participation to date by women and men in these fields has been limited.

Eligibility

  • You are continuing your education and/or re-entering the school system as a mature student
  • You have been accepted or wait listed into an eligible program of study

Any occupations in which women or men make up less than 25% of the total workforce is considered "non-traditional".

NBCC and NBCCD - Eligible Programs of Study (2011-12)

Award

Scholarships of equal value up to a maximum of $2,600 will be awarded, up to $150,000 total per year. The recipients of this scholarship can only receive the scholarship once.

Learning Matters Bursary

Learning Matters Education Charity provides financial assistance to Canadian children who would not otherwise have the financial means to obtain a post-secondary education. BGG Communications Award

The BBG Communications scholarship is designed for students between the ages of 16 and 21 who are currently in or will be attending an institution of higher education in the fall of the same year of the deadline for submission date.

  • Have at least one full year of post secondary studies remaining at the time of the award

The Charlotte Glencross Scholarship for Professional Development in the Arts

Established in 2009, in the name of Charlotte Glencross, the late Miramichi born textile artist, art administrator, arts educator and champion of the arts, this juried scholarship aims to support developing practitioners in the arts.

The NBFA offers the Charlotte Glencross Scholarship for Professional Development in the Arts to a candidate who has demonstrated exceptional potential and talent as an artist; intends to study arts at a recognized institution or with a recognized private instructor for the purpose of pursuing a career as a professional artist or arts professional.

Eligibility

Only New Brunswick residents are eligible. A resident is defined as a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant who has resided in New Brunswick for at least one year immediately preceding the application deadline. Students may reapply every year.

The McGraw-Hill Ryerson Student Scholarship Award is designed to celebrate student learning and success in post-secondary education. The Bursary for Foster Children

Storwell is offering an annual bursary in support of foster children to help them attend post-secondary schools and to offer a hand up as they make their way forward in life.  The award is non-renewable but candidates are welcome to apply for it once a year. The successful candidate is an active member of their community, has excellent grades and displays financial need.

Eligibility

  • Applicant must have been a foster child with either CCAS or CAS or similar official Canadian foster care program and agrees to having the above organization verify the same
  • Will be enrolled as a full-time student at a recognized post-secondary institution in Canada
  • Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Applicant must be 24 years of age or less at the time of application
