National Union Terry Fox Memorial Scholarship

The Terry Fox Memorial Scholarship for $1,500 is open to all students with disabilities who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education institution full-time in 2010-2011 and who are the children of, or foster children of, a member of the National Union of Public and General Employees. It will be awarded for the best 750-1,000 word essay on: The importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of people with disabilities.

EligibilityApplicants must be children, or foster children, of National Union of Public and General Employees members who plan to enter a post-secondary institution.

The Canadian Hard of Hearing Association Scholarship Program

The purpose of the Scholarship Program is to offer financial assistance and recognition to hard of hearing and deafened students registered in a full time program at a recognized college or university, in any area of study, with the ultimate goal of obtaining a diploma or degree.

Please note: only one application needs to be completed to apply for all scholarships.


Eligibility
  • must be either hard of hearing, deafened or oral deaf
  • may be first-time or returning post-secondary students, registered in a full time program at a recognized College or University
  • must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident/landed immigrant, convention refugee or a protected person living in Canada, as defined in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

Provincial Artisans Bursary

Provincial Artisans’ bursaries and scholarships are awarded annually to successful recipients with disabilities meeting the necessary criteria.

Wallace Anderson Memorial Scholarship Fund

Saint John Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services administer a scholarship fund for students who are manually deaf and reside in Southwestern New Brunswick.  2002 marked the first year of this scholarship and will continue on an early basis providing applications are received by April 30 of each year.  Full time, part time or reduced course load students all qualify.  Criteria for scholarship selection will not depend on academic achievement.  'The amount of scholarships and the number of scholarships awarded will depend on the number of applicants and available funding.

Scholarship criteria: the scholarship is designed to enhance manual deaf students living in southwestern New Brunswick who wish to further their education goals on a full time or part time basis.  There is no age limit for deaf applicants pursuing post secondary studies and can be applied for on a yearly basis.  This can include, but is not limited to, University, College, private schools, and literacy programs

S.R. Hussey Memorial Fund
Dr. Hussey was an inspiration to the many who came into contact with him. Through his work as a teacher, he came to recognize that there was a need for a fund to assist those who had completed their schooling with further education and/or training. He was appointed convener of the new Scholarship Fund in 1951 by the Maritime Division, Canadian Council for the Blind. After his death in 1964, the fund was renamed the S.R. Hussey Memorial Fund. The fund is able to provide a limited amount of assistance to residents of Atlantic Canada who meet one of the two criteria as follows:

Eligibility

  • Legally blind persons in the pursuit of studies or training and the purchase of necessary equipment
  • Legally blind persons for the purchase of equipment or other services to be used in their employment

The Alliance for Equality of Blind Canadians

The Alliance for Equality of Blind Canadians (AEBC) is dedicated to providing blind, deaf-blind, and partially sighted individuals with the opportunities they need to compete on an equal basis with other members of Canadian society. Through public education and advocacy, our organization works to improve the lives of these Canadians by providing a forum for mentorship, discussion, and action on issues of common concern.

Each year, the AEBC offers scholarships to recognize outstanding blind, deaf-blind, and partially sighted post-secondary school students. This year there will be two awards in total: 2 (two) $1,000.00 scholarships.

Each scholarship will be accompanied by a year's free membership to AEBC. They are as follows:

  • The Alan H. Neville Memorial Scholarship in memory of an AEBC pioneer and valued advisor
  • The AEBC Rick Oakes Memorial Scholarship in memory of a well-loved contributorIt is not necessary to submit separate applications, as applicants will be considered for all scholarships for which they qualify.
