RBC Aboriginal Student Awards ProgramThe RBC Aboriginal Student Awards Program was launched in 1992 to assist Aboriginal students to complete post-secondary education, and provide an opportunity for RBC to strengthen its relationship with the Aboriginal community. Selected students are awarded up to $4,000 each academic year for two to four years to use towards tuition, textbooks, supplies and living expenses.

RBC awards 10 scholarships in two categories:

  • For students majoring in disciplines related to the financial services industry
  • For students majoring in disciplines unrelated to the financial services industry

EligibilityYou are eligible to apply to the RBC Aboriginal Student Awards Program if you are a Status Indian*, a Non-status Indian, Inuit or Métis and meet these criteria:

  • You are a permanent resident or citizen of Canada
  • You have been accepted to or are currently attending an accredited post-secondary institution in Canada
  • You maintain a full course load that leads to a recognized degree, certificate or diploma
  • You have two to four years remaining in your current academic program
  • You require financial assistance to pursue your education

If you are already receiving partial funding from other sources, you may still apply to the RBC Aboriginal Student Awards Program to cover additional educational and living expenses.

*Indian as defined in Section 2(1) of the Indian Act

Amount

$4,000 per academic year for educational and living expenses for two to four years.

Union of NB Indians (UNBI) Scholarship

UNBI Scholarships are awarded to post-secondary graduate and undergraduate students for leadership, academic achievement and financial need.  Please remember that a scholarship is never intended to cover all the costs of a students educational program.  It supplements other financial resources from each First Nation community for students.  Companies who wish to support the advancement of the Mi’kmaq and Maliseet people make awards possible.  Recipients cannot receive more than one scholarship per year.  All students are encouraged to apply and submit application as soon as possible.

Eligibility

Must be a member of a UNBI First Nation.

National Union for Aboriginal Canadians

The Scholarship for Aboriginal Canadians for $1,500 is open to all Aboriginal Canadian students who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education institution full-time in 2010-2011 and who are the children of, or foster children of, a National Union of Public and General Employees member. It will be awarded for the best 750-1,000 word essay on: The importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of Aboriginal Canadians.

Eligibility

Applicants must be children, or foster children, of National Union of Public and General Employees members who plan to enter a post-secondary institution.

FAAY Scholarship

The Foundation for the Advancement of Aboriginal Youth (FAAY) is a national scholarship and bursary program administered by CCAB that responds to the critical need to assist Aboriginal high school and post secondary students with bursaries and scholarships — through the generous support of program sponsors.

Since its inception, FAAY has awarded over $2.6 million to First Nation, Inuit and Métis students.

Eligibility

Canadian residents, of First Nation (Status or Non-Status), Métis or Inuit heritage and attending either high school or a post-secondary institute full-time and within Canada are eligible to apply for financial support. Mature students and adult education programs are included.

The FAAY Selection Committee looks for:

  • Demonstrated financial need;
  • Academic and career commitment;
  • Contributions to family and community; and
  • Leadership and role model qualities.
Amount

Awards a minimum amount of $2,500 and is available to students pursuing a post-secondary education in any discipline.

Aboriginal Education Incentive Awards

The Aboriginal Education Incentive Awards (AEIA) celebrates the hard work and determination of Aboriginal people who have overcome personal, economic or social adversity in their pursuit of learning. If you have committed to furthering your education and have completed a year in an educational program, you may qualify. 

Eligibility

  • Must be an Aboriginal Canadian (First Nations, Métis or Inuit)
  • Must have been out of school for at least one year before returning
  • Must have completed one full year of studies before applying for this award
  • Award recipients cannot apply again.

Fine Arts Bursary Award Program

Post Secondary studies, personal development, training with a professional or at a non-accredited arts organization, in fields such as visual, performing, media, theatre, production, graphic and literary arts.

Eligibility

  • A Canadian resident Aboriginal individual who is either First Nation status or non-status*, Inuit or Métis and recognized by the Federal Government
  • In graduate level Fine Arts studies outside of Canada; or
  • As a full-time student in undergraduate or graduate programs that are a minimum of two academic years at an accredited Canadian university or technical college in fields that include media and visual arts

Canadian Aboriginal Writing and Arts Challenge

Are you an Aboriginal Canadian between the ages of 14-29? Showcase your talent and creativity, and have your work reviewed by the foremost Aboriginal artists! You could win cash prizes and even have your work exhibited in a gallery

Eligibility

You must be a Canadian of Aboriginal ancestry (Status, Non-Status, Inuit and Métis) and between the ages of 14-29

Prizes

1st place winners in each age category will receive:

  • $2000 cash prize
  • An all-expenses paid trip for two to a major Canadian city to receive his or her award at a special reception with a group of esteemed Aboriginal leaders and authors
  • An opportunity to have their artwork exhibited in a Canadian gallery

2nd Place Finalists in each age category will receive a $1000 cash prize
3rd Place Finalists in each age category will receive a $500 cash prize
4th to 5th Place Finalists in each age category will each receive a $100 cash prize


  • Top winners from Labrador and Northern Manitoba are eligible for a regional $500 prize sponsored by Vale
  • All Finalists will have their artwork published on the contest website
  • All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation acknowledging their hard work and participation in the program
