- Artist Tom Benner will give a talk to our students on Thursday November
25 at 6:30 pm, at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. First year students in
FVA and AVA are required to attend! Everyone else is encouraged, and
welcome.
- Students in the new Aboriginal Visual Arts program at the New Brunswick
College of Craft and Design had the unique opportunity to pound a New
Brunswick ash log for harvesting splints for use in aboriginal basketry.
- Aboriginal Visual Arts students have been invited to present workshops
in traditional birch bark basket making and beading at the annual
gathering of Mi’kmaq/Maliseet survivors of residential schools, at
Kingsclear First Nation, Nov 5-7.
- Director Michael Maynard recently delivered a public talk at
the annual general meeting of Fredericton Heritage Trust. The transcript

- Thursday, November 18, 2010 The Gallery at NBCCD throws open its doors
and opens up a discussion about Journey into Whatever, an exhibition of

- Ceramics Studio Head, Karen Burk, is having a Gallery opening reception on October 22, 2010 from 5-7pm at the UNB Art Centre in
Memorial Hall. The exhibition will run until December 1st, 2010. Gallery
hours are Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm.

- The
Gallery invites you to ‘Journey into Whatever: an exhibition of local
and transnational drawings' featuring the work of curators Adam MacDonald,
Joey Haley and a plethora of drawings in a salon style hanging that
embodies the creative enterprise of over thirty new works from local,
national and international artists.

- We
are happy to announce that students from the Graphics Program entered a
competition hosted by the Design Exchange for Random House's "New Face
of Fiction", to design a new identity (logo). Graduate Greg Webber
placed 3rd and won $500. Other graduates placing as finalist were:
Carmen MacKay, Nevin Brewer, Catherine Trudel, Erin Goodine, Ed Bowes.

- On Friday, June 18, the Gallery opened a new show, called Reflection:
Exploring Identity, which will run until late July. The show
features Advanced Studies graduates Joelle Richard and Matthew Brown.
- Communication Design graduate Philip Leblanc was recently voted
valedictorian by the student body. Details on Philip's
upcoming show at the Blue Door can be found here.
- The College recently celebrated the launch of the new Aboriginal
Visual Arts program starting this fall. For more news on the event click

- Janice Wright-Cheney, an instructor here at the
College, was recently
accepted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA). The RCA is
one
of Canada’s most prestigious and enduring institutions. We could not
be
more
proud of Janice for her accomplishments! For more information, check

- We
are proud to announce the winners of the draw from our Annual Open
House Celebrations! Brune Clavette won a College bookbag, and both Joan
Ward and Brenda Waiwood won art books. Congratulations everyone!
- The
New Brunswick College of Craft and Design is proud to welcome its new
Academic Dean:
Keith McAlpine, M.Ed. Keith is originally from Scotland and brings
extensive educational and management experience to this new position. He
has taught for 10 years in the public school systems of Scotland and
Canada, worked in a variety of roles with NBCC Woodstock, and has been
an Educational Consultant for the central office of Advanced Education
and Labour. Keith has also served as Dean of Instruction at NBCC
Miramichi and, most recently, has been a Learning Specialist at the
Department of Education where he worked primarily on the writing and
implementing of curricula. Welcome aboard Keith!

- Performing
Arts NB (PANB) is pleased to present A Life's Work: Making a living as a professional in the
Arts, on Tuesday, May 25,
at the Saint John Arts Centre. Four panelists, including our very own
Michael Maynard, will be at the event to discuss how an artist can run a
successful business and make a living from their art/craft.
- On
Saturday, May 15, the College held an annual Open House to
raise awareness of the different programs being offered and allow
instructors a chance to discuss their work with visitors. There were
demonstrations, discussions with instructors and information about the
upcoming EdVentures summer courses. Check out the article by the Daily Gleaner about the event!
- Congratulations to the raffle winners of a recent Professional
Development day hosted by the College. The winners are: Denise Chase,
who won an evening course here at the College, and John Lawrence, who
won a New Brunswick College of Craft and Design bookbag.
- Thanks also goes out to Dale McBride for organizing the first Spring Golf Tournament for the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design this past
weekend. Eighteen students, staff, family and friends braved the cold
winds to play at Kingswood Park on Saturday, May 8.
- A
special thanks goes out to everyone who helped to organize and deliver
the recent workshops for all the New Brunswick Visual Art teachers. The
workshops were a resounding success with over 180 teachers from across
the province participating!
- The New Brunswick Arts Board
(ArtsNB) has announced its annual student scholarships. Students from
the College of Craft and Design swept the provincial Craft and Visual
Arts categories. Winners include: Kristen Bishop, Matthew Brown,
Nicholas Frenette, Karen Furlotte, Daniel Gallagher, Celine Gorham,
Broderick LeBlanc, Sarah Lillian, Rachel Anne McGillivray, Alexander
Keely McLean, Leigh Merritt, Deborah Payne, Shannon Randall, and Greg
Webber all won $2,500 toward their full-time post-secondary studies next
year. Congratulations to all of you!
- Congratulations
are in order for graduating student Kristianne LeBreton for winning the
Best in Show prize of $250, as well as a solo exhibition, for her
functional sculptural urn entitled “Voyage”. Kristianne’s work is being
exhibited as part of the current New Brunswick College of Craft and
Design Gallery show “Experimetal”. The award is given out each year by
Gallery 78 and honors creativity and technical excellence.
- College
of Craft and Design promotional posters have won Gold Awards in the
prestigious Graphis international design competition, alongside work by
design luminaries Milton Glaser, Michael Schwab, Pentagram and Landor
Associates. The posters feature work by student Danielle Thorn
(photographed by instructor Drew Gilbert) and alumni Darren Emenau
(photographed by himself). Art directed by Michael Maynard and designed
by Malcolm Waddell, the posters were printed by Taylor Printing Group of
Fredericton. The posters will be posted on the Graphis website
(www.graphis.com) and reproduced in the 2011 Poster Annual, distributed
world-wide.
- Brigitte Clavette, Studio Head for
Jewellery/Metal Arts Studio, recently sold a piece to the Royal Ontario

- The College is pleased the
announce the addition of Michael Cote. Michael will be teaching both
Integrated Media and Graphic Design courses starting this fall. Welcome
to the College Michael!

- Michael Maynard spent
much of April visiting colleges in China. As a result, we are happy to
announce we have four new international agreements in place. For more
information regarding the trip, please visit Michael's blog.
- The
New Brunswick Crafts Council is currently exhibiting a collection of
work from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design’s Alumni. The
show is called “Capturing Form” and runs from April 23 to May 4.
- Thomas
Ferrero, the metal smith/sculptor and creator of "Artifacts of
Fantasy", which is currently on display at The Gallery of the New
Brunswick College of Craft and Design), returns Monday, April 19,
at 12 noon for a public meet and greet/artist talk.
- Diploma
of Advanced Studies graduate Greg Klassen was named New Brunswick's 'Studio Watch Artist' by the
Beaverbrook Art Gallery - a solo exhibit of Greg's work opened Sunday, April
18.
- Student Council hosted an outdoor BBQ at the

- Irenia
Roussel presents "Leveraging Financing" for artist in the next
TalkAbout public lecture series, April 13. Irenia works with
Business New Brunswick as a Project Executive. She was a member of a
winning student venture in the 2009 NBIF Breakthrough Awards and was a
recent contender on the CBC series, "Dragon's Den".

- An
exhibit of recent work by the College of Craft and
Design's photography students opened at the City Hall Gallery, April 8.
- Instructor

- Fashion Design Alumni partnered with The Heart Truth Campaign on March
27th to help raise awareness for the heart and stroke disease. Videos of

- The
Beaverbrook Art Gallery hosted a gala opening of artwork from the
collection of the late Ralph Kirkbride on March 19 to support
fundraising efforts for a scholarship in Ralph’s name for students at
the College of Craft and Design. Almost $8,000 was raised at the event.
- Alastair
Macleod, Chairman of Hand & Lock, British military embroiderers,
visited the College March 19 to present a workshop on hand
embroidery to students of the Fashion studio. Follow Alastair's North

- U.S.
entrepreneurial guru and author – and huge hockey fan – Guy Kawasaki
plays his first game of Canadian street hockey March 18 with
College students and staff while in Fredericton to speak at the annual
New Brunswick Innovation Foundation R3 Gala. Check out Guy's blog at

- On
March 18 the College signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the
Instituto Federal de Rondõnia, Brazil, creating another international
partnership and the opportunity for student and faculty exchanges.
- Recent
work by U.S. artist Tom Ferrero opened at the Gallery on March 16.
On the day of his opening, Tom presented workshops to Jewellery and
Metal Arts students on anticlastic forming, synclastic forming and stone

- CBC
Moncton visited the campus March 16 to interview francophone
members of the faculty, Brigitte Clavette and Denise Richard, for an
upcoming French-language documentary on the College.
- Representatives
from eight Brazilian colleges visit the College of Craft and Design March
14-18 to learn more about our approach to course design and
delivery; they were welcomed by Mayor Brad Woodside, toured Fredericton,
attended a St Patrick’s Day concert at The Playhouse and sampled maple
syrup at a sugar bush operation.
